Understanding the Difference

Speech vs Language Disorders

Speech Disorder

A speech disorder occurs when a person is unable to produce sounds correctly, fluently, or has difficulty with voice quality.

Common Speech Disorders Include:
  • Articulation disorders – difficulty pronouncing certain sounds correctly
  • Fluency disorders – such as stuttering or cluttering, where speech is not smooth or effortless
  • Voice disorders – involving problems with pitch, volume, or tone

Language Disorder

A language disorder affects a person's ability to understand others (receptive language) or to express thoughts, ideas, and feelings effectively (expressive language).

Example:

A stroke can cause aphasia, a type of language disorder that affects speech comprehension and expression.

Both children and adults can experience speech and language disorders. They may arise from medical conditions, developmental differences, or sometimes have no identifiable cause.

Our Specializations

Types of Speech Therapy at Audica

Fluency Disorders

Fluency disorders affect the smoothness and rhythm of speech.

People with fluency issues may:
  • Repeat whole words or parts of words
  • Pause awkwardly between words
  • Speak rapidly or merge words together
  • Use filler sounds such as "uh" or "um" frequently
Stuttering & Cluttering

The most common fluency disorders are stuttering and cluttering. While many people experience occasional disfluencies, individuals with fluency disorders find speaking and being understood a daily struggle.

Our Approach: Our therapists at Audica use evidence-based techniques to help clients speak more smoothly, confidently, and naturally.

Articulation Disorders

An articulation disorder occurs when a person cannot correctly form specific speech sounds.

Example: A child might replace "r" with "w" ("wabbit" instead of "rabbit") or "th" with "s."

Articulation involves the movement of the tongue, lips, teeth, and jaw to produce speech sounds correctly.

Speech Sound Disorders in Children

Most children learn to articulate all speech sounds by the age of 4 or 5. If they continue to have unclear speech beyond this age, they may have an articulation disorder, sometimes called a speech sound disorder or articulation delay.

When articulation is affected, speech becomes unclear and may impact a child's learning, social interaction, and self-confidence.

Our Approach: At Audica, our specialists work closely with children through interactive, engaging speech therapy sessions to help them speak clearly and confidently.

Communication Disorders

A communication disorder is a broader condition that affects a person's ability to receive, process, or express information.

This includes difficulties in:
  • Hearing and processing sounds
  • Understanding spoken or written language
  • Producing verbal, nonverbal, or symbolic communication
Comprehensive Support

Communication disorders can range from mild to severe, and may be developmental (present from childhood) or acquired (due to injury or illness).

They can occur as a primary disability or be secondary to other medical or developmental conditions.

Our Approach: Our team at Audica provides holistic evaluation and therapy for all forms of communication disorders, ensuring that each person receives customized support suited to their individual needs.
